Urban Outlaw Band

A note from John Forte
The band started in 1986 with myself, Jeff McCray and Mike Tammaro. We played all original songs. Jeff and I stayed together
but the band members changed as we moved along. We originally wrote ballads and preferred love songs. Then we went through a pop and jazz phase, after which we wrote a few hard rock songs, and we finally found what was our sound the “Lonesome Cowboy”, “The Rivers Edge” period. At one point we recorded at least 5 demos and 1 CD.

Jeff and I went to a studio and recorded a 5 song demo where we played all the instruments and did all the vocals. We almost had a record deal with Atlantic records but they passed after they told us they didn’t know how to market us but they loved the music. Angelo was the lead vocalist during our mellow period but when the style changed Jeff became the lead vocalist because his voice suited the new material better.

First off, the Photo above from left to right is:
ANGELO (percussion and vocals);
VINNIE (Keys);
ALAN (drums),
JEFF (Lead Guitar, Lead Vocals),
JOHN (Bass and Vocals),
ME (Acoustic Guitar)

When the Urban Outlaws lost the deal the band broke up. I probably was the first to leave. After all, I had played with them for a year and was dedicated to getting a gig at least. No regrets really. I thought Jeff and John wrote some great music but I have a different style. I actually got to play with John after the breakup but it didn’t work out. So here you can listen to us live at Rockaway studios. I played Acoustic Guitar. We had a lot of fun! Rest in Peace Jeff! I miss you!

Electric Omlet

Photo of the band electric Omlet

Image of lightningA biographical sketch of the band and it’s members –

Electric Omlet was first formed in the winter of 1989 and has since performed indoor and outdoor shows indulging in their blues/rock/60’s style psycadelia. Initially intended as a trio consisting of the classic Guitar, Bass, Drumsset-up, they most recently added a fourth member to the band. Mr. Fred Ross, keyboardist-vocalist, who adds much dimension to an already unique and powerful trio and is a major part in drastically expanding the bands repertoire.

On seeing the band live one can feel the true energy of soud coming straight from the heart of it’s players. Electric Omlet is well known for their ability to play with much “heart and soul” guarenteeing to make the audience truly feel the music as opposed to being a “human jukebox” as many bands unfortunately to sound.

There is no doubt that the root of the band lies in the rhythm section. With the founder of the band, Barry “the caveman” Ostrov on bass guitar and vocals, in the drivers seat, is sure to be a good time had by all those present. Of course, there would be no beat to bop to without Bob “Bullet” Perlman on drums and percussion. Bob is a valuable addition to the band adding a “fuaion jazz” element to the rhythm section. This awesome player has played and done session work with several top notch players in the New York musician scene. The last to be mentioned on the cast of characters that drives Omlet, is the bands chief organizer: Guitar Player/Vocalist, Carlos Anthony “Axeman” Acha. Best well known his eclectic/metal/rock edge and bluesy tone, this member is the front and center of the band. His credits include work with the Peter Duchin orchestra, Bill Godwin of the Ink spots and The Urban Outlaw Band.

Electric Omlet has played exclusively throughout New York State in clubs, restaurants, social functions and street fairs. They perform original and cover material.

Thanks to Alan Weinberg for writing this great bio!

Music will come soon…..Here’s another photo of the band.

Naked Soul

Bob Perlman
Naked Soul was an original band that I put together with the help of my beloved friend Bob Perlman, may he rest in peace. Please note that Bob was an awesome drummer and he also played with me in Electric Omlet (see next post). Well, Mr. Perlman hooked me up with a great person and awesome Sax player, Brian Smith. I like to mix jazz and blues so Brian was a perfect match!

Brian Smith
I say “great person” because Brian worked or still works as an EMT  (Emergency Medical Technician for EMS).  The stories he would tell me were incredible!  He saved lives all the time.  And he saved mine too because we needed a Sax player!  We lost touch a while ago.  He would call me all the time on his break.

Scott Weisberg
Scott Weisberg, “The Weapon”, as we called him is the Drummer and a Policeman. Now, since this photo, he has been promoted to Sergeant.   Awesome Powerful Drummer!  Good friend.  This and all the pictures you see here were taken on one of the sessions while we were working on the Album/CD.

Chris Quashie (lower)
Chris Quashie, “Dodge”.  as we called him is the Bass player.  We called him “Dodge” because it was like he was never around.  We knew he had a few girlfriends around the city.  No doubt about that!

I met him in an old Liquor Store on Gravesend Road in Brooklyn..  It was a stormy night…. figured I’d go in and get some shots to go.  He came out of the back of the store.  I asked him what he was doing.  He said “playing”.  I said “Playing what?”  He showed me his Bass and we wound up practicing in the store a few nights a week.  The old lady that lived above the store used to knock on the floor all the time.  Now she knocked harder!

Well there I am, with my shades on.  Aimee is the name of the guitar. She’s a fine lady with a big fat tone.  I was usually a back up singer like my Mom was, but I stepped it up a notch on this album.  The band wrote and recorded a few originals: Naked Soul; Man of Few Words; The Nightmare and What the Hell is Goin’ On, (with the exception of “The Nightmare”, which was recorded at Finalcut Studios, and written by Hear ‘n Now, all other songs on the “Naked Soul” album were recorded at Electric Plant Studios in Brooklyn, NY.  We also recorded a few cover tunes that we loved to play.  It was fun working with Vinnie the Audio Technician at Electric Plant.  He did a great job!  We practiced hard sometimes…..and sometimes we let loose!  Enjoy tracks from the CD!

Scott and I had a prerequisite band called “Hear ‘n Now”. Unfortunately Scott and the bass player used to fight all the time. I don’t mean arguing. I mean down and dirty cowboy shit. The movies glamorize the fight. In real life it is not so fun. So here are a few extra tracks that Scott and I wrote. Vinnie G was a great part of the band but he was quite juvenile. Let’s get real!

Thanks to Mr. Mike Ventimigglia for his appearance on “The Nightmare” (Keyboards) and my good friend Jason Tanzer, the Recording Technician at Finalcut Studios. You can find my good friend Jay at Norms Music on Staten Island, NY. He’s is the best!!
